Sourdough fail (left) and success (right)

Baking bread gives me a feeling of certainty. At the end of the process, I know that there will be something tangible that I can take away from the energy that I have put in. Although my baking doesn’t always turn out the way that I expect, I’m learning to let it go and embrace failure.

Refer to the photo above where I had a fail because my sourdough starter needed a bit more time and I didn’t need the dough enough. The end result was that the sourdough bread didn’t rise that much after baking and it was a little hard.

Lessons that apply to baking and in life:

  1. Keep practicing until I get the result that I want. I can always try again if the finished product doesn’t turn out.
  2. Embrace baking for my own personal growth in trying new things instead of seeking external validation.
  3. Progress is good. Taking action to move forward keeps me in momentum. I watched some videos about scoring the bread to improve the look of the final product — work in progress.
  4. Letting go of the fear of failure and the need to be ‘perfect.’
  5. Be patient and kind to myself. Trust that I can do it.

All good life lessons to remember 🙏
